Six Attacking Set-Piece Patterns in Modern Football
An attacking set-piece pattern is a rehearsed movement scheme a team uses from a dead ball. Unlike open play, a set piece begins from a known position with a stationary ball and eleven players who have had all week to agree what happens next. That combination makes it the most designable phase in football, and the one where coaching effort converts most directly into structure.

Why set pieces became a specialist discipline
For most of the sport's history, the set piece was treated as an interruption to the real game. Two developments changed that. The first was analytical: once shot locations could be catalogued at scale, it became clear that dead-ball situations produce a meaningful share of goals while occupying a tiny share of playing time, which makes them unusually efficient to work on.
